Gray Line Worldwide , based in Denver, Colorado, operates sightseeing tours and related travel offers worldwide .

The company was founded in 1910 by Louis Bush, who used a self-converted Mack truck to tour Washington, DC . Gray Line has since expanded into a globally active brand, transporting approximately 25 million passengers a year. In Central Europe tours in Salzburg , Zurich , Munich and Berlin are offered. The program also includes transfer services to the respective airports or between various tourist destinations, including in Costa Rica .

As early as 1946, the concept proved so economically interesting that franchisees got into the business. In 1985 a court decision was made that the company did not hire a black driver in 1973 despite the given qualifications; none of the 53 drivers at the time were black.

In 2015, due to a cartel formation in New York, multi-million dollar fines were imposed and the leading bus operators were obliged to allow other companies to stop at tourist destinations. The tours from the often open double-decker bus and the associated, rather offensive street sales are sometimes seen as a disruptive factor and the bus routes as competition for local public transport in New York.

New York Ride of Fame

On the occasion of its centenary, Gray Line Worldwide began honoring celebrities for their contribution to public life in New York in 2010: The honorees receive a sign which is placed on a bus during the ceremony. Meanwhile, a labeled seat is dedicated to the honorees. The first such award went to Rachael Ray in 2010 . The honors are typically held monthly and usually begin at Pier 78 on the Hudson . Corresponding honors have also been held in Miami and Washington, DC since 2014 . So far, the honorees include: B. Whoopi Goldberg , Cyndi Lauper or Donald Trump .
