Ridled

Ridled from a rider's perspective
There are also many paths that can be prepared well in winter

Ridled called in Sweden one for trail riding marked route, since it is based on cards often difficult to know whether a way to ride is. With the aim of improving the accessibility of nature for the rider, various organizations - from cooperatives to rural districts and associations - have started to build long-distance riding trails.

The construction and maintenance of long-distance hiking trails and bicycle routes has a long tradition in Sweden, to which the word led is linked.

The right of public access allowed to ride in the woods and fields in Sweden, but is not always free of conflict. If you ride on the marked hiking trails you know that the landowner has given his consent to the route and can fall back on an infrastructure along the way that is important for the needs of the rider. For riders who cannot bring their own horse, there is often the option of renting horses from riding companies located on the way. In many cases, a route fee is due for using the route. Horses that want to use the roosts usually need proof of vaccination.

The word ridled is also used for shorter riding trails, which are mostly laid out around equestrian facilities in densely populated areas. Despite the general right to ride in nature, it is advisable, where possible, to use the ridged leather to minimize conflicts between landowners and riders.

Well-known active hiking trails (ridleder)

  • "Ridleder i Tiveden " is a 300 km long network of trails that is divided into 14 stages. The trail around the central Swedish Tiveden National Park in Örebro County is run by an association and is one of the most active and mostly mounted trails.
  • The “Skaraborgsleden” in the area of the municipality of Tidaholm in the province of Västra Götaland is about 120 km long.
  • The "Ridled in Bergsmansbygden" in southern Dalarna is approx. 300 km long and certain parts can also be traveled by horse and carriage.
  • The Gusturleden is 40 km long and starts outside Sundsvall in the province of Västernorrland . It is run by an Icelandic horse club.
  • "Ridled genom Halland " is a 110 km long bridle path in the Halland landscape between Malmö and Gothenburg . 40 km of the bridle path go over paved roads, which is otherwise unusual.
  • The “Sörmlandsleden” bridle path goes 500 km through the Sörmland and partly has the same route as the hiking and cycling paths of the same name
  • "Skagen runt" is a 100 km long combined cycle, hiking and riding trail in the border area between Götaland and Svealand around Lake Skagern
  • “Ridled genom glasriket” is a 105 km long bridle path in the municipality of Nybro , which leads through the Swedish “ Glasriket ” ( Kingdom of Crystal ). The path was inaugurated in 2007.
  • In Småland is the approximately 80 km long "Norra Värends Ridled".

Paths without central path maintenance

Many riding trails were built as part of project funding. After this project funding has expired, it is often difficult to continue operating a central information and maintenance unit. Even if nobody is able to maintain central functions at the level that is usual in the funding phase, the paths in nature are still available and current descriptions can be found on well-established paths. The companies that provide the infrastructure also normally continue to exist, so that the paths can often be conveniently prepared years later.

Important and well-known ways in which central maintenance has been discontinued are:

  • "Ridled Siljan" goes around Lake Siljan in Dalarna . Although the cooperative that built the bridle path went bankrupt, the bridle path still exists in nature. Only the overarching responsibility for the route is no longer, the individual quarters are not affected by the bankruptcy. There is no overall homepage. Information can be found on the website of the municipality of Rättvik, for example.
  • On the island of Gotland there was the HovLeden , a hiking, riding and driving sport trail that leads around the entire island and, with its 600 km route, was one of the largest in Sweden. The ferry crossing by horse is not a problem. The operation of the Zentralweg and the central website was discontinued in 2016 and the initiating cooperative was dissolved. Most of the approximately 40 member companies continue to exist unchanged and continue to offer equestrian activities.
