The Riedkapelle also known as the Riedkapelle zum St. Otmar " called, is a chapel in Unteropfingen , a suburb of Kirchdorf an der Iller in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia .

description

The chapel, which was built in the 18th century , is located on Kanalstrasse, on a roughly triangular pointed lawn bordered by curbs, at the confluence with Kreisstrasse 7578, which leads from Unteropfingen to Oberopfingen . An older chapel was once located in its place. The name Riedkapelle comes from the Ried located here before the Illerkanal was built . The construction of the canal in 1910 resulted in a lowering of the groundwater level by around 10 meters and a decline in the typical reed vegetation. At the western end of the pointed lawn there is an ash tree that towers over twice the size of the building , and in the east there is a wooden cross about 3.5 meters high flanked by two box trees. There is a bench on the east wall . In the 19th century, the chapel was extended by a yoke , with a resulting adjacent second entrance on the north side. In the extension, which can be entered separately through a doorway without a door, there is a Lourdes grotto .

The east-facing , beaver-tail-roofed , rectangular sacred building has a gable roof with a hip , after the yoke that was additionally attached in the 19th century, to the west. Light falls into the original structure of the chapel through two oval windows with bars on the outside on the south and north sides. The Lourdes grotto is connected to the actual church interior via a barred window. The floor tiles were laid in a diagonal pattern in the colors black, brick red and light beige. The rest of the furniture is made up of three knee benches, separated by a corridor. On the plinths in the middle of the room on the left and right there are wooden sculptures of Christ and Otmar , the first abbot of the St. Gallen monastery . There is a fresco on the ceiling . The baroque altar has an altar panel painted in oil with the theme “Mother of God and Child”. In the upper altar niche there is a sculpture depicting St. Sebastian represents. After the Second World War, three boards with lists of those killed and missing from the First and Second World Wars were installed in the annex. The chapel is secured with an alarm system.
