Riffs III - The rats of Manhattan (Original title: Rats - Notte di terrore ) is an Italian post-apocalyptic science fiction film from 1984 by Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragasso . It is set in 2240, almost 225 years old, "After the Bomb", a devastating atomic bomb apocalypse that forced people to seek protection under the surface of the earth. From then on they called themselves "second humanity". The film follows a group of people who belong to the “New Primitives” of the “Third Humanity” who dared to come back to the surface of the earth a hundred years after the catastrophe and fight for survival in the wasteland of dead earth.

action

A group of eleven people under their leader Kurt discovers an apparently deserted place on their journey through the wasteland of the devastated earth. In the back of a saloon you will find rooms with beds and several boxes of sugar, which after weeks of searching for food causes great euphoria in the group. Rats appear sporadically, but they are normal on earth at these times because they could spread uncontrollably without humans. Shortly afterwards, they discover a corpse in one of the beds and suspect that the person was killed out of greed and left behind. A second body is found in a closet, which then raises concerns and questions in the group. In the basement of the building you will find plants in small greenhouses, as well as a computer terminal that displays the “Total Elimination Group”.

In the evening corpses are brought outside and cremated, the group plans to spend the night in the saloon. But then very many rats appear in the basement, in the saloon and outside in front of the saloon and kill Lilith and Lucifer and destroy the tires of the motorcycles to prevent an escape. Meanwhile, Noah is attacked by rats in the basement and thereby aggressive and insane, which is why he is killed by Kurt with a flamethrower. The rats seem to see humans as their primary food, not their supplies. When Diana is attacked and taken to one of the beds to relax, Kurt, Deus, Video and Taurus want to get water from the cellar for her. During the attempt, Taurus is killed by the rats and, out of panic, Duke barricades himself with Diana, Myrna and Chocolate in the room with the beds and declares himself the new leader. But he is overwhelmed with a trick Chocolates and rejoins the group.

When the group wanted to leave the saloon, the entire room was already overrun with rats. They make it through this obstacle, but Duke then takes Myrna hostage and, out of desperation, blows them up with a grenade, destroying one of their armored vehicles. Diana then commits suicide out of desperation.

When the group only consisted of four people, they found an audio recording in which there was talk of scientific research into combating radioactivity, the contamination of the earth and its effects, as well as the horror that comes from the earth. While the group debates what this might mean, rats are surrounding them on all sides and they are trying to tear down the door. Kurt and Deus sacrifice themselves so that the last two survivors, Chocolate and Video, can escape outside.

There seems to be unexpected help, because a group of people in protective suits is climbing out of a manhole in the street. It sprays gas which appears to kill the rats, or at least drive them away. Chocolate and Video are stunned by the gas, but a short time later they wake up unmolested outdoors. They want to thank their rescuers and ask them to take them back underground with the rest of humanity. When one of the people then takes off her protective mask, Video and Chocolate discover with fear and horror that underneath is not a human face, but a large, furry rat head.

publication

In Germany, the film opened in cinemas on August 3, 1984 and was only shown in limited cinemas in the USA in 1986. It was released on DVD by Anchor Bay in 2005 and again by Blue Underground in 2007 . The German distribution title "Riffs III - Die Ratten von Manhattan" is misleading because it wrongly presents the film as the second sequel to The Riffs - We are the violence after The Riffs II - Escape from the Bronx , both from 1982.
