location
The refuge is located on the west side of the Adamellomassiv east of the Valcamonica . From the latter at Rino, a fraction of the municipality of Sonico , the Val Malga branches off in a south-easterly direction, at the north-east end of which the Rifugio is located on the edge of a hollow, the Conca del Baitone, in the immediate vicinity of Lake Rotondo. The Corno Baitone ( 3300 m slm ) rises north of the hut . In addition to Lago Rotondo, there are a number of other mountain lakes in the area.
The Rifugio Franco Tonolini is located on Adamello High Trail No. 1 .
history
The hut was inaugurated in August 1891 after four months of construction, at that time under the name "Capanna Baitone al Lago Rotondo". With the construction of the hut financed by the CAI Section Brescia, Alpini troops also helped , who transported the building material to the construction site with their mules . In 1901, the one-story building was expanded for the first time, so that it could accommodate 18 people. After the end of the First World War , it was renamed to the Alpini captain Franco Tonolini from Brescia, who fell during the 3rd Battle of the Piave and was awarded the gold medal for bravery . In 1944 the rifugio was set on fire and destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1949, expanded in 1991 and restored in 2012.
