Rimsingen is the name of a former village on the southwestern slope of the Tuniberg west of Freiburg im Breisgau . Rimsingen has always consisted of two parts of the village, the cores of which were about 500 m apart. The present-day villages of Niederrimsingen and Oberrimsingen were independent municipalities until they were incorporated into the city of Breisach am Rhein in 1973 and 1975, respectively.

history

The village of Rimsingen was first mentioned in writing in 819 in a deed of donation to the Lorsch monastery . In the 10th century the noble free von Rimsingen owned the village. Count Birchtilo donated the monastery in Sulzburg in 993 and furnished it with goods in Niederrimsingen. The lords of Üsenberg descend from the Rimsingen family and had their castle and ancestral seat on the rocky island of the same name in the Rhine below Breisach . In 1072, Hesso von Üsenberg called monks from the Abbey of Cluny in Burgundian to Oberrimsingen, who a few years later under their first prior Gerold moved the monastery from Tuniberg to nearby Grüningen , which has now disappeared .

Due to the ecclesiastical conditions, a separation of the two Rimsingen was initiated, but the first mention of Oberrimsingen in 1291 and Niederrimsingen in 1334 can only be seen in connection with the feudal system . In 1275 the separation of the two settlements became clear with the mention of "Rimsingen superior" (German: Obern Rimsingen 1329).

Numerous monasteries owned extensive land in Oberrimsingen in the 12th century, and in the following centuries the Lords of Üsenberg, the Margraves of Hachberg , the city of Breisach, the Günterstal Monastery and the Lords of Falkenstein owned goods and rights. In 1430 Oberrimsingen came under the rule of the Lords of Staufen , but Niederrimsingen remained with Breisach. This different rulership led to the formation of the two communities.
