Life

During World War II, Dami served in the Italian Air Force on the North African Front , where he was taken prisoner by the British in 1943. He was first taken to an internment camp in Algeria and then to Malta. It was thanks to this fact that he learned the English language and got to know the world of comics. He was particularly fascinated by the American authors Milton Caniff , Frank Robbins and Alex Toth . After returning to Milan in 1947, he worked in advertising and animation. He worked in the film studio of Nino Pagot , where he was involved as a draftsman in the animated film I fratelli Dinamite (1949). This work is considered to be one of the first full-length cartoons in Italy and the first Italian film to be shot in Technicolor . In 1948 he made his debut as a comic artist in the Bleck e Gionni series by Andrea Lavezzolo . In the same year he began his collaboration with Edizioni Audace, where he was involved in the comic series La pattuglia dei senza paura by the writer Giovanni Luigi Bonelli alongside Guido Zamperoni and Franco Donatelli . In 1949, under the pseudonym Roy D'Amy, he created the comic series Mani in Alto (in German: hands up! ) About the adventures of the cavalry sergeant Teddy Star, which is one of his most successful works. This series was published in Germany in 1954 under the title Sheriff Teddy by Walter Lehning Verlag . In the 1950s Dami was one of the illustrators of the comic series Pecos Bill by copywriter Guido Martina and chief illustrator Raffaele Paparella . It was published in 1971 in Germany by Bildschriftverlag . In 1952 he drew 18 episodes in the Gordon Jim series about the adventures of a Scottish nobleman during the American Revolutionary War , an English translation of which was published in the British comic magazine Knockout in 1956 . In 1954 Dami and his brother Piero founded the artist agency Studio Creazioni D'Ami in Milan, with which numerous well-known comic artists were under contract, including Gino D'Antonio, Ruggero Giovannini, Ferdinando Tacconi, Sergio Tarquinio, Sergio Asteriti, Enrico Bagnoli, Dino Battaglia , Franco Bignotti, Renzo Calegari, Antonio Canale, Leone Cimpellin, Aldo Di Gennaro, Giorgio De Gaspari, Nadir Quinto, Sergio Tuis, Franco Tarantola and Mario Uggeri. The agency also provided the design work for foreign publishers and agencies, including Fleetway in England and Editions Lug in France. From 1954 to 1957 Dami worked for the weekly children's magazine Corriere dei Piccoli , in which he published the humorous comic stories Scuterino and Indianetto . In 1956 he was involved in the comic book Davy Crockett by Carlo Porziani and Renzo Calegari . In 1958, together with Carlo Porziani, he founded the agency Agenzia di produioni editoriali Dami, which specialized in informative and educational books. In 1960 the Dami brothers broke up. While Rinaldo continued to work with Porziani, Piero founded the children's book publisher Dami Editore.

In the late 1960s, Dami focused on animal books for children. For the publishing house Casa Editrice in Milan he edited 22 volumes of the series Guarda e scopri gli animali , 20 of which appeared in the series Bunter Kinder-Kosmos in a German translation by the Franckh'schen Verlagshandlung in Stuttgart.
