The bark shredder ( Ceruchus chrysomelinus ) is a beetle from the Schröter family (Lucanidae). The species is the only representative of its genus in Central Europe.

features

The beetles reach a body length of 11 to 16 millimeters and have a very shiny, black-colored body. In the male, the head is the same width as the pronotum and has large mandibles with two large teeth on the inside and numerous light long hairs. The females have a narrower head and their mandibles are also significantly smaller.

Occurrence

The species is distributed from Europe to the west of Siberia . In the north, the distribution extends to central Sweden and Finland. It is absent in the British Isles, the Netherlands and the Balkans.

The larvae develop mainly in rot-rotten dead wood of firs and spruces , more rarely also from pine , beech and birch . The larvae are located in the area between fresh and rotten wood. It takes two to three years to develop and pupation takes place in the wood. The adults hatch at the end of summer, overwinter and only come to light in the following summer. The species is rare in Central Europe, it is shown in the Red List of Threatened Species as critically endangered (Category 2).
