Ringaudas Bronislovas Songaila (born April 20, 1929 in Klaipėda ; † June 25, 2019 ) was a Soviet-Lithuanian politician . He was a member of the Communist Party of Lithuania ( Lietuvos Komunistų Partija ), chairman of the Council of Ministers and chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR . He also headed the Lithuanian SSR from 1987 to 1988 as its first secretary .

Life

He was Minister of Agricultural Production of LSSR. From 1959 he was a deputy in the Soviet-Lithuanian and from 1979 in the Soviet Supreme Soviet, from 1975 to 1981 chairman of the Lithuanian Supreme Council. On January 16, 1981, he succeeded Juozas Maniūšis as Chairman of the Council of Ministers. He kept this office until his replacement by Vytautas Sakalauskas on January 18, 1985. He then became de facto Speaker of Parliament of the Lithuanian SSR as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet .

The high point of his political career, however, was his appointment as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Lithuania ( Lietuvos Komunistų Partija ) on December 1, 1987 as the successor to the long-term party leader Petras Griškevičius, who had recently died . The hope of an implementation of the reform policy of glasnost and perestroika initiated by Mikhail Gorbachev in Lithuania was thus initially disappointed, as he was known as a conservative functionary. However, due to his unpopularity, he lost this office on October 20, 1988 to the reform-oriented Central Committee Secretary for Industry , Algirdas Brazauskas .

He was the first party leader to be removed from office, as both Griškevičius and his predecessor Antanas Sniečkus had retained the post of first secretary of the LKP until death.
