Rini Otte

Rini Otte , maiden name: Sarah Catharina Otte , (born April 26, 1917 in Amsterdam , Kingdom of the Netherlands ; † May 19, 1991 ibid) was a Dutch actress , illustrator , draftsman and sculptor .

Life

Otte was born the daughter of a decorative painter. In 1935 she was given by the Dutch Film Studio Cinetone a supporting role in the film Suikerfreule . When shooting this film, a cameraman advised her to audition for Jonge Harten . Although she had no acting experience, she got one of the main roles in this film. Both the film critics and the cinema audience praised her for her natural and spontaneous manner.

In 1936 Otte was given the leading female role in the film Komedie om Geld through the Jewish- German director Max Ophüls, who lived in exile in the Netherlands . The film was well received by the critics but was not a box office hit. Through Ophüls she got to know the exile Fritz Helmut Landshoff , who with Emanuel Querido initiated the Amsterdam exile publisher Querido Verlag . Otte entered into a relationship with Landshoff and traveled with him through various European countries. She turned away from film acting and devoted herself to her favorite pastime, drawing. She drew advertising cards and illustrated book covers. In addition, she took acting lessons in London in 1939.

In 1940 she received a supporting role in his film Ergens in Nederland from the German director Ludwig Berger . She played a supporting role here alongside two Dutch actresses of the early 20th century, Lily Bouwmeester and Fien de la Maar . The film had a great success in the Netherlands, but had to be discontinued very soon after the German occupation of the country in April 1940.

In the winter of 1940/1941 Otte took on a role in the play Het Masker before moving to The Hague in 1941 . There she played at Het Residentie Tooneel until 1946 . In 1942 she married the actor Jan Retèl . The couple moved to Voorburg . After the end of acting came the end of their marriage. Landshoff returned from New York and Otte left her husband to go to the United States with her old lover . There she married Landshoff and had their first child from him before the couple returned to the Netherlands in 1947. There Otte dealt with sculpture in the following years. With Landshoff she had another child. The couple stayed married until Landshoff's death in 1988. Otte died in 1991 at the age of 74 in a nursing home in Amsterdam.
