Rise of Avernus is an Australian progressive doom and symphonic metal band from Sydney , formed in 2011.

history

The band was founded in 2011 as a studio project by the singer and keyboardist Catherine "Cat" Guirguis and the guitarist, bassist and singer Ben Vanvollehoven. At the beginning of 2012 a first self-titled EP was released , which consists of three songs. Then guitarist Matthew Bell and drummer Andrew Craig completed the line-up. This was followed by national appearances, with the group's range of activities extending as far as Darwin . Rise of Avernus also opened for Apocalyptica in Sydney and took part in the Sydney part of the Whiplash Frestival in October . At the end of 2013 they went on tour through Australia with Enslaved . After the debut album L'Appel du vide was self-released in the same year, appearances followed in 2014 with Kylesa . In the middle of the year the band played with Septicflesh in Sydney, whereupon Guirgius left the band and they were replaced by Mary Lawton aka Mares Refalæða. In 2018 the second album Eigengrau was released via Code666 Records .

style

According to Brian Giffin in his Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal , the band play progressive doom metal. Peter Mildner from Metal.de found that the band played orchestral and progressive doom metal on L'Appel du vide . It sounds as if the band had “chased fat produced guitars, Gothic melodies, tons of canned orchestral bombast , the associated epic, female fronted vocals, male growls and a complexity that goes beyond the usual through the mixer, ultimately for thirty thousand ideas which all sound nice on their own - but together they do not result in a mature album ”and which means that the group lacks its own identity. The speed of the songs is mostly in the middle range. Despite the occasional use of saxophones and industrial sounds in the style of The Monolith Deathcult as well as sporadic excursions into symphonic black metal , the music does not prevent the music from "passing through as very ambitious but unfortunately common, symphonic female-fronted gothic metal". According to Andreas Schiffmann from Rock Hard is eigengrau of "encouraging succinct Doom Death -Kleinodien in drab tones" and THAT CONDITION there "Gothic kitsch free, which is easily in this area rests". The band also makes use of orchestral passages.
