Rising Storm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rising Storm is a computer game developed by Tripwire Interactive in collaboration with the modding community. The game is based on Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad . The Pacific War at the time of World War II serves as the setting . The game was announced in May 2010 and released as scheduled on May 30, 2013. The beta version went online on May 8, 2013.

Gameplay

Rising Storm is a tactical shooter with a focus on realistic infantry combat. All basic gameplay elements from the main game, such as the cover system and weapon ballistics, have been retained. The add-on brings with it a completely new arsenal that corresponds to the historical armament of the Japanese and Americans in the Pacific War. Rising Storm offers four playable factions, including the United States Marine Corps , the United States Army , the Imperial Japanese Army and the Special Landing Forces of the Imperial Japanese Navy . The gameplay was described by the developer Tripwire as asymmetrical due to the inferior armament of the Japanese. In order not to affect the balance too much, the Japanese are equipped with a number of special skills, such as the banzai attack , in which the player carries out a charge at the push of a button, in which he himself suffers less damage and suppresses opponents. If other players join this attack, the effect is increased. Another special feature in the Japanese arsenal is the knee mortar , as well as the possibility of using hand grenades as booby traps. The Americans, on the other hand, rely on their superior firepower, so only the automatic rifle shooter class is available to them, which is equipped with the Browning Automatic Rifle and can provide rapid fire support. To prevent excessive digging of the Japanese, players can ally the M2 Flamethrower use to evacuate to quickly bunkers and machine-gun nests. The player has to adapt his style of play to the strengths and weaknesses of his team, which ensures dynamic battles. The cards are designed for up to 64 players and lead the player through varied environments, from the beaches of Iwojima to the street fights in Charan Kanoa to the battle of Saipan (a desert-like environment).

The free Island Assault Content Pack was released on September 29, 2013 by Tripwire Interactive and includes two new weapons, a new map and a multiplayer campaign mode known from the main game.

development

Rising Storm was first announced on May 18, 2010, and it was developed on the basis of Unreal Engine 3 in collaboration with the modding community.

After the main game Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingra d had to be adapted for a release in Germany, and the beta had also been cut for German users, both the developers and the network community assumed similar problems with Rising Storm . However, contrary to many fears, the entertainment software self- check gave the uncut version submitted by the German sales force the approval “No youth approval”. Tripwire Interactive responded with a patch on the day of publication that provided the missing effects, which is only available in the version registered on Steam . This was announced on the official forum with the following statement:

Our German distribution partner has finished having Rising Storm rated by the USK, and they have given the game at 18 rating. And now for the surprise… The version of the game they gave this rating is the full uncut version of the game! Surprise! This means with the first patch we will be removing the gore restrictions for German users! "

reception

Rising Storm was well received by the press and gamers alike. GameStar awarded 81% and called it an "exciting team shooter with a high entry barrier". On Metacritic , too , Rising Storm was received largely positively with 82% in the average specialist ratings and 8.5 / 10 in the user ratings. The critics praised the dense atmosphere, the realistic gameplay and the good balance. On the other hand, the outdated graphics and the difficult entry for beginners were criticized.
