The Mansfeld Museum is a museum on the history of Mansfeld copper slate mining in the Burgörner district of the city of Hettstedt in the Mansfeld-Südharz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It is located in the Humboldt Castle, the manor house of the former Burgörner manor. The building is named after its previous owners, those of Humboldt.

At the place of today's Humboldt Castle, also Rittergut Burgörner-Altdorf, there was a castle of the Counts of Arnstein from the 13th century. In 1394 the castle came into the possession of the Mansfeld family. The castle is the residue of a late Gothic water castle from which even the dungeon with elevated situated east entrance and a connected square, half-timbered tower. In 1573 the castle complex was considered desolate .

Caroline von Humboldt , Wilhelm von Humboldt's wife , inherited the property after the death of her father Karl Friedrich von Dacheröden . The building remained in the possession of the von Humboldt family until the middle of the 19th century.

A section of the museum is devoted to the history of the Burgörner estate and its famous owners. The first German steam engine, which was used to pump water from tunnels, stood in the manor area of ​​the castle. In the castle there is a wedding room of the registry office.

The building is now a listed building and is in the local directory monument under the acquisition number 094 65108 as a monument listed.

In the castle and on the large open-air site, the museum presents the more than 1000-year-old social and technical development of copper mining in the Mansfeld region in words, pictures and hands-on . In the foyer of the castle, mountain comrade Martin welcomes the guests with a mountain beard and coat of arms.

Original exhibits illustrate the development of metallurgy in the county of Mansfeld. One attraction is the faithful replica of the first steam engine built by German workers and engineers in 1785 based on Watt's model.

The Mansfeld Museum is known for its annual model steam days and the mineral and fossil exchange.

In October 2004, a scientific colloquium was held in the museum as part of the 2004 cultural theme year in Saxony-Anhalt, "Enlightenment through education".
