The River Ellen is a river in Cumbria , England . The River Ellen arises on the western slopes of Great Sca Fell and Little Sca Fell in the Uldale Fells in the Lake District National Park . The river initially flows north until it turns south of the village of Boltongate in a generally westerly direction, which it maintains until it meets the Solway Firth in Maryport .
Trout and salmon live in the river and can be fished with a permit.
