The River Frome rises in Dodington Park west of Tormaton in South Gloucestershire .
River Frome is the name of several rivers in south west England. The name comes from Old English and means something like "active" or "good" in German.
From its source the Frome flows in a westerly direction through the places Chipping Sodbury and Yate . To the west of Yate, the river turns in a southwesterly direction. Just before the M4 and M32 junction, the river crosses the M4 and first follows the course of the M32 under which it runs, at the end of which on the edge of downtown Bristol . From there, the Frome is completely underground through the city center. The Frome empties into the Avon in an area within Bristol city center called the Floating Harbor , where the Avon is regulated by locks according to the tides .
The Frome Valley Walkway runs from Old Sudbury east of Chipping Sudbury 30 km along the river to Bristol.
