The River Greta is a watercourse in County Durham , England . It arises at the confluence of Yardstone Beck and Ay Gill . It flows in an easterly direction always south of the A66 road . At the Greta Bridge, southeast of Barnard Castle , it turns north and crosses under the road, only to flow into the tees shortly afterwards at the so-called Meeting of the Waters .
