Riyoko Ikeda

Riyoko Ikeda ( Japanese 池田 理 代 子 , Ikeda Riyoko ; born December 18, 1947 in Osaka ) is a Japanese manga artist .

She made her debut as a professional manga artist in 1967 with Bara-Yashiki no Shōjo . She also studied philosophy . Ikeda joined a communist youth association as a student and was involved in the anti-nuclear movement.

In 1972 she began work on The Roses of Versailles , in which she dealt with the French Revolution . The manga was finished in 1973 after 1,800 pages and was a huge success in Japan, later also implemented as an anime and a musical and marketed internationally. The ten anthologies of the manga series sold around fifteen million copies in Japan.

At the beginning of the 1980s she switched to the Josei genre, but was unable to continue her successes in the 1970s. Since 1998 she has been working mainly as a scenarioist on her manga titles, her former assistant Erika Miyamoto ( 宮本 え り か , Miyamoto Erika ) acts as a draftsman.

Along with Moto Hagio and Keiko Takemiya, she belongs to the group of 24s .
