The Honnschaft Roßkothen was a rural settlement and belonged to the Reichsabbey of Werden . Roßkothen was part of the municipality of Vierhonnschaften until 1875 and from 1875 to October 10, 1929, together with Ickten and the circumstance, part of the municipality of Dreihonnschaften of the Kettwig-Land mayor .

On August 1, 1929, the north-eastern part was incorporated into the city of Essen , Schuir district . The south-western part came to the city of Kettwig on October 10, 1929 after the community was dissolved .

The Rossenbeck rises near Roßkothen . The Kernweiler is located immediately south of the Essen-Mülheim airport , between Haarzopf in the northeast, Schuir in the east, and circumstance (and Kettwig behind it) in the south. It is located just north of the A 52 and thus in the Mülheim urban area, on the southeast edge of the Menden district .

The former headquarters of the Lords of Roßkothen, a moated castle , was closed in 1850.

The coat of arms was designed by Kurt Schweder and never had an official character. At the end of the 1980s, the heraldist created coats of arms for all of Essen's districts.

The coat of arms is a so-called " talking coat of arms "; the horse's head stands for "Roß-" and the house for "-kothen", derived from Kotten .
