Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock was an American hip-hop duo, consisting of Rob Base (Robert Ginyard, born May 18, 1967 in Harlem , New York City ) and DJ EZ Rock (Rodney "Skip" Bryce, born 1967 or 1968 in Harlem, New York City; † April 27, 2014 ).

Career

Ginyard and Bryce grew up as school friends in Harlem. Together they came into contact with hip-hop culture . Ginyard got himself a microphone and took the pseudonym Rob Base, while Bryce switched to DJing and took the name DJ EZ Rock. Together with others they formed the group Sureshot Seven, which lasted until the end of their high school days . When the group broke up, the two continued as a duo.

Their first single DJ Interview was released in 1986 and was released on a compilation on the World to World label. Then Make it Hot came out , a song with which they were allowed to open up for various hip-hop groups. In 1988 they recorded the song It Takes Two , which they sent to Profile Records . It Takes Two , based on a sample of Lyn Collins' song Think (about It) , became a huge hit. It was used as a sample by Snoop Dogg , Gang Starr , Girl Talk and 2NE1 , among others . It appeared on the soundtracks of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) and the film Self Is the Bride (2009). The corresponding album of the same name was also a success and reached number 31 on the Billboard 200 and earned the duo a platinum record .

Shortly thereafter, the duo broke up. Rob Base released the album The Incredible Base (1989) alone . In 1994 the duo came back together and released the third album Break of Dawn , which was unsuccessful.

Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock then went their separate ways and continued to perform under their respective stage names. However, neither of the two released another phonogram. DJ EZ Rock passed away on April 27, 2014 at the age of 46.
