Robert Ioan Licu (born May 7, 1969 ) is a former Romanian handball player . He is currently working as a handball trainer.

Athletic career

At the 12th handball world championship in 1990 in Czechoslovakia Licu won the bronze medal with the Romanian selection .

Robert Licu participated in the XXV for the Romanian national handball team . 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. In this tournament he scored 30 goals in 6 games for the Romanian selection and finished 8th in the tournament with the Romanian selection. In the tournament's top scorer list, he finished 4th.

After the games in Barcelona Licu moved in 1993 to the handball Bundesliga at SC Magdeburg , where he was one of the outstanding players until 1998. He made a significant contribution to winning the DHB Cup in 1996. His other stations in Germany were ThSV Eisenach and SV Post Schwerin . In 2003 he returned to SC Magdeburg, where he was supposed to replace the outgoing playmaker Ólafur Stefánsson .

The left-hander Licu completed 243 international matches for Romania and played on the right backcourt position. With 1,054 goals he is the second best shooter in Romania behind Vasile Stîngă .

After his active career, Licu worked as a youth trainer in Romania. He has been coaching the Rapid Bucharest women's team since November 2018 .

Robert Licu is the son of the two-time handball world champion and former coach of SC Magdeburg Gheorghe "Ghiță" Licu .
