James Robert Cade (born September 26, 1927 in San Antonio , Texas , † November 27, 2007 ) was an American professor of medicine and physiology at the University of Florida and invented the sports drink Gatorade .

Cade graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas in Dallas , Texas . During his time in college, he went to the Delta-Ypsilon connection. He was also in the Navy.

Cade invented Gatorade and offered the rights to the drink to the University of Florida , which, however, refused to accept the offer. Cade then signed a contract with Stokley-Van Camp and began selling the drink. As sales increased, the university asked for the patent rights, but Cade did not give it. He used part of his profits to create scholarships and invested in local businesses. The university took legal action against him and finally came to an agreement.

Cade died of kidney failure at the age of 80.
