Robert Cahen (* 1945 in Valence , Département Drôme ) is a French video artist .

life and work

Robert Cahen was born in southeast France in 1945. He completed his studies in composition at the Paris Conservatory with Pierre Schaeffer and Michel Chion .

"Schaeffer taught me to edit sounds, to listen to a sound in itself, to know how to grasp what's in a sound independently of its original concept ... that helped me to realize that you can look at an image without looking at what it originally signifies. "

- Robert Cahen

From 1971 to 1974, Cahen was a member of the ORTF's Groupe de recherches musicales . From 1973 to 1976 he headed the experimental video department at ORTF / INA.

Cahen is considered to be one of the pioneers of video art. In his early video works, Cahen developed the basic principles of his work: a narrative approach that relies sparsely on words on the montage of images and music, an interest in the transition from still to moving images and the use of slow motion in a media-influenced and visual accelerated the present in order to make the unseen perceptible. Cahen's works deal with the perception of time, the fragility of memory and human mortality. He tells non-linear, ambiguous stories.
