Robert Campbell (fur trader)
Robert Campbell (born February 21, 1808 in Glen Lyon , Scotland , † May 9, 1894 at the Merchiston Ranch near Riding Mountain , Manitoba ) was a mountain man , trapper , fur trader and explorer. He worked with William Sublette in the early 1830s before joining the Hudson's Bay Company after the Rocky Mountain Fur Company collapsed . For this he explored large parts of the southern Yukon Territory and founded Fort Frances on Frances Lake in the headwaters of the Liard River and Fort Selkirk at the confluence of the Yukon River with the Pelly River . He was temporarily responsible for Fort Halkett .
The Campbell Peak south of the community Liard River in British Columbia was named after him. The Robert Campbell Highway in the Yukon Territory also bears his name.
