biography

İbrahim Erkal was born in 1966 in Narman County, Erzurum Province. He was the oldest of six siblings. Erkal finished high school in his home town of Narman. During his school days he learned to play the baglama , mandolin and flute independently . After graduating from school, he received lessons in sheet music and solfège at the Musa Eroğlu Müzik Eğitim Merkezi in Ankara . In the evenings he performed as a singer in various clubs in Ankara.

From 1988 to 1989, Erkal did his military service in Istanbul . After that he first returned to Erzurum. However, shortly afterwards he traveled to Istanbul again to get his music career going. While he was working as a waiter in the Nişantaşı district, he also performed as a pianist and udplayer .

During this time, Erkal also wrote his own songs and now had enough material for a whole music album . However, the attempts to get a record deal were initially unsuccessful. After not getting a chance from the record companies, İbrahim Erkal was discouraged and was about to give up when he met producer İskender Ulus. The record boss of Ulus Müzik took the then 25-year-old singer under contract, and on May 6, 1993, his first album Tutku . With 150,000 units sold, the album was rather unsuccessful. Nevertheless, the record company stuck to Erkal, and almost two years later, on March 6, 1995, his second album Sıra Bende / Aklımdasın was released . Erkal drew attention to himself with songs like İnsafsız and Sevmesen De Olur . The album was a little more successful than its predecessor with 270,000 copies sold.

On July 8, 1996, the third album Gönlünüze Talibim hit stores. With the songs Yalnızım , Erzurum'a Gel and Unutmayacağım the singer received a lot of attention. However, it was the song Canısı and the film of the same name in which Erkal played the leading role that made him a star. With sales of 1,400,000 units, Gönlünüze Talibim was one of the best-selling albums of the year. After the great success of the film, İbrahim Erkal reported back with the 26 episode television series Canısı of the same name .

Erkal continued his music career on May 15, 1998 with his fourth album Sırılsıklam . Songs like Gâvurun Kızı , Güllerede Küstüm and Dönemem helped the album to sell 1,600,000 copies and even surpassed the success of its predecessor.

At that time, İbrahim Erkal was not only one of the most successful singers, but also one of the most sought-after songwriters in Turkey. Among other things, he wrote songs for artists such as İbrahim Tatlıses , Burhan Çaçan, Ayhan Aşan, Zara, Hülya Avşar , Metin Şentürk, İzzet Yıldızhan and Kader. In the same year, the singer appeared in front of the cameras with the 32 episode television series Sırılsıklam .

His album De Get Yalan Dünya , released on January 5, 2000, underpinned the rise of İbrahim Erkal with sales of 1,100,000 units. He is one of the few artists who were able to sell more than 1 million copies each with three successive albums. Only artists like Muazzez Ersoy , İbrahim Tatlıses and Tarkan could otherwise claim this at this point in time.

His sixth album is called Su Gibi and was released on April 18, 2001. With 400,000 copies sold, it was not as successful as its predecessor. In 2002 the singer processed his career in poetry with the book Ben Bu Şöhreti Sevmedim . On July 16 of the same year his album Aşknâme was released , but it could not be placed among the best-selling albums.

With songs like Yandım , Taze Taze and Gönül Limanı , Ibrahim Erkal returned on July 21, 2004 with his eighth album. The comeback was relatively successful with 250,000 units of the album sold, as album sales had fallen sharply due to the spread of the Internet and thus illegal downloads. After the moderate success of his subsequent albums, İbrahim Erkal retired from the music business for some time. In June 2011 he worked on his eleventh album, which was to be released in the summer of 2011 and was to be named Burnumda Tütüyorsun .

On the night of April 12, 2017, Erkal collapsed in a parking garage with a brain hemorrhage, whereupon a security guard discovered him. Without waking up from the coma, Erkal was declared brain dead on May 9, 2017 . Two days later, on May 11, 2017, there was a cardiac arrest and then death.
