Robert Descharnes
Robert Descharnes (born January 1, 1926 in Nevers , France , † February 15, 2014 in the Indre-et-Loire department ) was a French photographer , avant-garde filmmaker and one of the most important biographers of the painter Salvador Dalí .
Descharnes met Gala and Salvador Dalí in 1950 on the America liner on a trip to the USA. A close collaboration developed between Dalí and Descharnes, especially in the field of film. Together they made the film The Unusual Tale of the Lace Maker and the Rhinoceros in 1954 , based on Dalí's theories about the logarithmic spiral . Descharnes became a close friend and secretary of the painter.
When Dalí's factory was threatened by an avalanche of counterfeiting in the 1980s, Dalí appointed Descharnes in 1986 to head Demart, the company's aim to protect Dalí's copyright , a position Descharnes held until he retired in 2004. He was considered a leading expert on Dalí's works. In 2011 Descharnes was named Chevalier des Arts et Lettres .
