Robert Dewar

Robert Berriedale Keith Dewar (born June 21, 1945 in Oxford ; † June 30, 2015 ) was an American computer scientist .

He was born to Michael JS Dewar and his wife Mary. They emigrated to the USA in 1959.

In 1964 he graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor's degree and in 1968 his Ph.D. In the same year he became an assistant professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology . In 1975 he went to New York University , where he was Professor of Computer Science from 1976 to 2005. During this time he contributed to SNOBOL4 , Ada and SETL . 1994–97 he was also an associate professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University . In 1994 he co-founded a software company, where he was chief executive officer until his death .

He was married to Karin Anderson, with whom he had two children.
