Robert Downs Haworth
Robert Downs Haworth (born March 15, 1898 in Cheadle , Cheshire , † May 19, 1990 ) was an English chemist ( organic chemistry ).
Haworth was the son of a school principal, was at Arthur Lapworth in 1922 at the University of Manchester PhD and worked as a post-graduate student at Oxford in junior William Henry Perkin . From 1927 he was a professor at the University of Newcastle and from 1939 at the University of Sheffield .
He dealt with the chemistry of natural substances ( resins , tannins , structure and synthesis of alkaloids ).
A variant of Friedel-Crafts alkylation , the Haworth reaction, is named after him (1932). It creates 1-tetralone . The related phenanthrene synthesis, the Haworth synthesis (1932), is named after him.
In 1956 he received the Davy Medal . In 1944 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society .
Peter Pauson is one of his doctoral students .
