Robert Eddison

Robert Eddison OBE (born June 10, 1908 in Yokohama , Japan , † December 14, 1991 in London , England ) was a British actor.

life and career

From 1938 Eddison stood in front of the camera for cinema and television productions. After the beginning of the Second World War , in which he served, he could not find a new role until 1948, this time for the film Vice Versa . From the 1970s, Eddison appeared increasingly in TV films with a historical or literary background, such as in 1970 in Edward II or Oedipus the King 1984. Eddison had his best-known film role as the ancient guardian of the Grail in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade , his penultimate movie. He ended his film career in 1991 in American Girlfriends . He died at the end of the same year.

Compared to his film career, Eddison was clearly more profiled as a stage actor. He played in many of William Shakespeare's plays , one of his star roles being Hamlet at the Old Vic Theater . He also played King Lear in a New York production. Eddison received a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor for his appearance in Was ihr wollt . He also appeared on stage in other classical pieces by Sophocles , Henrik Ibsen , Anton Chekhov and Oscar Wilde . In 1988 he was promoted to the Order of the British Empire for his services to the theater .
