Robert Fitzralph

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Fitzralph († June 30, 1191 or June 27, 1193) was an Anglo-Norman clergyman. From 1191 he was Bishop of Worcester .

Robert Fitzralph was a son of William Fitzralph, who served as Sheriff of Nottingham and Derby and Seneschal of Normandy under King Henry II . Robert also initially entered the service of the king. Together with Walter de Coutances , Archbishop of Rouen, he traveled in 1186 as envoy to King Philip II of France . The king rewarded his services with a canon in Lincoln and with the office of archdeacon of Nottingham. On July 1, 1190, Robert was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Worcester . His election led to a long dispute between the papal legate William de Longchamp , the monks of the Cathedral Priory of Canterbury, and Bishop Gilbert de Glanville of Rochester. Since Archbishop Baldwin of Canterbury had already set out on the Third Crusade with King Richard I , it was unclear where and by whom Robert Fitzralph was to be ordained bishop. Robert eventually had to get the Pope's permission to be ordained bishop at Westminster . Nevertheless, he was consecrated on May 5, 1191 in Canterbury by William de Longchamp. Little is known about his brief tenure as bishop. There are contradicting information about the date of his death. His successor Henry de Sully was elected bishop in December 1193.
