Robert Flechsig

Robert Ferdinand Flechsig (born January 8, 1817 in Oelsnitz / Erzgebirge , † September 30, 1892 in Bad Elster ) was a well doctor, balneologist and author of medical writings.

Live and act

Flechsig was the son of the surgeon Gottlob Flechsig from Oelsnitz in the Ore Mountains. After the first years of school he attended the grammar school in Zwickau from 1830 to 1836 . He then studied medicine , surgery and obstetrics at the University of Würzburg from 1836 to 1839 . From 1847 Flechsig was the first bath and fountain doctor in the Royal Saxon State Baths in Bad Elster . Under his direction, in the opening year 1847, the first official bathing season in Bad Elster was held with 129 spa guests who received 2,499 medicinal water baths and 325 mud baths. He worked as a spa doctor until his death in 1892. In addition to his practical work as a doctor, he devoted himself to extensive scientific work for the development of balneology . With his extensive publications, he has opened up the extensive specialist field to doctors and patients alike. For his work he was u. a. honored with the titles of Hofrat (1860) and Privy Councilor (1875). To commemorate his work, a memorial stone was placed in front of his former home in Bad Elster in 1992. In his hometown of Oelsnitz in the Ore Mountains, a street name Flechsigweg reminds of the doctor Flechsig. On the occasion of his 200th birthday, a memorial matinee took place in Bad Elster in January 2017.
