Robert G. Leffingwell (born July 30, 1909 in Iowa , † October 18, 1984 in Florida ) was an American film producer and illustrator for comics and animated films , who was nominated for an Oscar in 1952 for the short film he produced, The Story of Time was.

biography

Robert G. Leffingwell stood in for his brother Ed Leffingwell, who died in 1936, in 1936 and continued his work on the comic strip Little Joe , which appeared every Sunday in the Chicago Tribune . He did so until 1972, when the Little Joe story ended. Both brothers were assistants to their cousin Harold Gray on his famous comic strip Little Orphan Annie . After Gray's death in 1968, Leffingwell also temporarily stepped in for his Little Orphan Annie . Other comic drawings were made for Centaur ( Evidence Eddy , Taint So! ) And National Periodicals Publications ( It's A Dern Lie , Sagebrush 'n' Cactus , Sir Loin of Beef ).

In 1938 Leffingwell was one of the cartoonists for the animated film Whale in Sight , which revolves around Mickey , Donald and Goofy and a whaling ship . In the film, Walt Disney gave his voice to Mickey Mouse. The following year Leffingwell was the chief draftsman for the cartoon Gulliver's Travels . This was followed in 1940 by a work for the animated film Me Feelins Is Hurt , in which the sailor Popeye wins Olivia's heart.

In 1951, Leffingwell drew attention again with the short documentary film The Story of Time , in which the narrator reports on the origins of time measurement. Leffingwell produced the film for Rolex in Technicolor . Real film recordings were mixed with animated sequences. The film was awarded a golden plaque in the category “Best Commercial” at the 1951 Berlinale and was also nominated for an Oscar in the category “Best Short Film” (1 film role) at the 1952 Academy Awards. However, the trophy went to Robert Youngson and his film World of Kids .

Robert G. Leffingwell died in 1984 at the age of 75.
