Robert Henry

Robert Henry (born February 18, 1718 in St Ninians , Stirlingshire , † November 24, 1790 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish historian .

Live and act

Robert Henry was the son of the farmer James Henry from Muirtown in Stirlingshire and his wife Jean nee. Galloway. He attended schools in St Ninians and Stirling and studied at Edinburgh University . He then entered the service of the Church of Scotland . From 1738 he worked at Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, received ordination in 1748 and in 1771 the Doctor of Divinity at Edinburgh University. In 1774 he was the moderator of the General Assembly ( Synod ) of the Church of Scotland. In 1783 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

His main work is the six-volume History of Great Britain , which was published from 1771. It covers the period from the Roman conquest (55 BC) to the end of the reign of Henry VIII (1547). Henry pursued a new concept in that he dealt with topics such as civil history, military history or social history individually in chronological order. The work was published in several editions by different publishers and was translated into French. It was supplemented by James Pettit Andrews in 1796 to include the period up to the enthronement of James VI. of Scotland as the English King James I in 1603.
