Robert Hughes (producer)

Robert Hughes (born April 2, 1929 in South Bend , Indiana , † July 24, 1972 in New York City ) was an American film producer and director in the field of documentary films .

Life

Hughes has made various documentaries about well-known personalities such as Ralph Ellison and Vladimir Nabokov . He also worked for the United Nations on various documentaries on refugees and other topics. The television documentary Arthur Penn, 1922-: Themes and Variants about director Arthur Penn earned him an Emmy in 1971 . In the 1950s and 1960s he published several books on film.

For Robert Frost: A Lover's Quarrel with the World won Hughes in 1964 the Oscar in the category Best Documentary . In addition to his production activities, he was also involved in the film as a co-director and screenwriter.

Hughes died of a heart attack at the age of 43. At the time of his death, he was working on a documentary about Allen Funt .

Hughes was divorced from actress Tresa Hughes and had a daughter.
