Robert Jeffrey Zimmer (born November 5, 1947 in New York City ) is an American mathematician. In 2006 he became the 13th President of the University of Chicago .

Zimmer attended Stuyvesant High School in New York and studied at Brandeis University with a bachelor's degree summa cum laude in 1968 and Harvard University with a master's degree in 1971 and a doctorate with George Mackey in 1975 (Ergodic Group Actions with Generalized Discrete Spectrum) . He taught until 1977 as an assistant professor at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis and from 1977 as an instructor at the University of Chicago, where he became an associate professor in 1979 and a professor in 1980. He stayed there, only interrupted from 1981 to 1983 at the University of California, Berkeley , and from 2002 to 2006 as Provost and Ford Foundation Professor at Brown University . In 2006 he became President of the University of Chicago, where he had previously been Associate Provost for Research and Education (1995 to 1998), Deputy Provost for Research (1998 to 2000), Deputy Provost (2000 to 2001) and Vice President for Research in charge of the Argonne National Laboratory was. As President of the University of Chicago, he is also Chairman of the Council of Argonne National Laboratory, Chairman of the Council of Fermi Research Alliance LLC (which operates the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory ) and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole.

He deals with differential geometry, ergodic theory and Lie groups and pursues a research program ( Zimmer program , with a number of conjectures that stimulated further research) on the effect of semi-simple Lie groups and their discrete subgroups on differentiable manifolds and proved a generalization of the superstiffness theorem of Grigori Margulis on cocycles . Besides Margulis, he is also influenced by Michail Leonidowitsch Gromow and his work on rigid transformation groups . Zimmer worked with Alexander Lubotzky , François Labourie and Shahar Mozes , among others .

He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society , Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , Honorary Doctorates from Tsinghua University and Colby College, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 1979 to 1983 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . He is a member of the National Science Board. He was visiting scholar and visiting professor at Harvard, France, Switzerland, Australia, Italy and Israel.

In 1986 he was invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berkeley, where he presented his Zimmer program (lecture: Actions of semisimple groups and discrete subgroups).

From 1974 to 2009 he was married to the economist Terese Schwartzman, with whom he has three sons, and is married to the classical philologist Shadi Bartsch . In the 1980s, he accompanied his wife to Tashkent for six months, as she was studying the Soviet economy there. There he met Grigori Margulis for the first time.
