Robert Kandelhardt (born August 21, 1867 in Oldenburg (Oldb) ; † February 18, 1959 there ) was a German violin maker .

Life

Kandelhardt was the son of the Merseburg- born Hautboist Franz Kandelhardt (1832–1915), who was a violist with the Oldenburg court orchestra for around forty years and since 1869 also traded in music. Kandelhardt attended grammar school in Oldenburg up to Tertia and then learned the profession of violin maker from the important master Reinhard Paulus in Markneukirchen in the Vogtland , from whose family several well-known violin makers came from in the 18th and 19th centuries. In an additional year of training, Kandelhardt also learned the art of repairing old violins. After his military service , he took over his father's business in 1893 and continued it under the name of Franz Kandelhardt & Son . In the same year he married Anna Gläsel, the daughter of the Markneukirchen music director. In addition to trading in musical instruments and exporting violins to North America, Kandelhardt was also involved in violin making and repairing valuable old violins, and acquired an important reputation in this area. At the Northwest German Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in Oldenburg in 1905, he exhibited the instruments he had built for a quartet (first and second violin, viola, cello) and received a gold medal for them. He built a total of 82 violins, six cellos and four violas. Declining eyesight forced him to give up violin making and repairing in 1950. In the last years of his life he was completely blind.

Kandelhardt belonged to the Oldenburg Schlaraffia for around 50 years . Furthermore, he was particularly interested in contemporary Oldenburg painters. Bernhard Winter had already drawn his parents and Jan Oeltjen portrayed him and his wife.
