Robert Keith, 1st Lord Altrie
Robert Keith, 1st Lord Altrie (around 1529, † around April 1596 ) was a Scottish nobleman .
Life
He was the younger son of William Keith, 3rd Earl Marischal († 1581), and Margaret Keith.
From his uncle Robert Keith († 1551) he inherited the office of Commendatarabbot of the Cistercian monastery Deer in Aberdeenshire . As Abbot of Deer, he attended sessions of the Scottish Parliament on several occasions .
He married Elizabeth Lundie, the related marriage contract was signed on May 24, 1566. The marriage remained childless.
On July 29, 1587, King James VI awarded him . the hereditary title of Lord Altrie . For this purpose, the Catholic Deer monastery was secularized and converted into a secular fiefdom. Since he had no children, the award was made with the special addition that, in the absence of any male descendants, the title was also given to his nephew George Keith, 4th Earl Marischal , the only son of his late older brother William Keith, Master of Marischal († 1580 ), and whose male descendants are inheritable.
In 1589 he was sent to Denmark as the Scottish ambassador to celebrate the marriage of King Jacob VI. to negotiate with Princess Anna of Denmark . Robert refused this assignment and apologized with his poor health and old age. The job was finally carried out by his aforementioned nephew, who inherited him when he died in 1596.
The exact date of his death is not known. It was last documented on March 18, 1596. On May 19, 1596 his nephew George Keith, 4th Earl Marischal, had inherited him as 2nd Lord Altrie.
