Robert Papperitz

Benjamin Robert Papperitz (born December 4, 1826 in Pirna , † September 29, 1903 in Leipzig ) was a German organist and university professor .

Life

Robert Papperitz first studied philology. He worked as a teacher for two years, but gave up this job in order to study music from 1848 at the Conservatory in Leipzig, today's University of Music and Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig . Immediately after his final exam in 1851, he was accepted into the teaching staff of the conservatory. In 1857 he was at the University of Jena to the Dr. phil. PhD. He taught harmony and counterpoint , and later also organ playing. From 1868 to 1899 he was Ernst Friedrich Richter’s successor, alongside his teaching post, organist at the Nikolaikirche . In 1882 he was appointed royal Saxon professor. His large number of pupils included Karl Attenhofer , Felix Draeseke , Stephen Albert Emery , Paul Homeyer , Iwan Knorr , Oskar Merikanto , Karl Piutti , Bernhard Romberg and Sir Arthur Sullivan .

Works

As a composer, Robert Papperitz published songs, pieces for four- and eight-part choir, for organ and for theoretical lessons.
