Robert Powell (zoologist)

Robert "Bob" Powell (born August 17, 1948 in Germany ) is an American herpetologist . His research focus is the herpetofauna of the Caribbean .

Life

Powell was born in Germany but grew up in Missouri . In 1970 he received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Missouri and in 1971 a Master of Arts from the University of Missouri-Kansas City . In 1984 he was with the dissertation variation in spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) from Missouri to Ph.D. PhD from the University of Missouri. In 1989 he became Professor and Coordinator in the Biology Department at Avila College in Kansas City and. From 1994 to 2018 he was Professor of Biology at Avila University in Kansas City.

Powell is a member of numerous organizations including the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists , American Society of Mammalogists , Association of College and University Biology Educators, Association of Systematics Collections, Biological Society of Washington, Chicago Herpetological Society, Council on Undergraduate Research, German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Studies , Herpetologists' League , International Iguana Society, IUCN Diminishing Amphibian Task Force, IUCN Iguana Specialist Group, Kansas City Herpetological Society, Kansas Herpetological Society, Maryland Herpetological Society, Missouri Academy of Science, Missouri Herpetological Association, Missouri Prairie Foundation, Societas Europaea Herpetologica , Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles, and Vida Silvestre Neotropical.

From 1991 to 2004 Powell was an editor for the Catalog of American Amphibians and Reptiles (CAAR). He has been one of the supervisors of the online edition since 2013. He was also an editor at Iguana , the journal of the International Iguana Society.

In 2005, Powell, in collaboration with Robert W. Henderson, described the gecko species Gonatodes daudini , which occurs on Union Island in the Grenadines . In 2010 he was part of his team of scientists who rediscovered the blind snake species Amerotyphlops tasymicris on Union Island , previously known only from two specimens collected on Grenada in 1968 .
