Robert Rickmers

Robert Rickmers (born September 21, 1864 in the Château des Asnieès in the Charente department ; † July 1, 1948 in Bremen- Oberneuland) was a German shipyard owner, shipowner and rice merchant.

biography

Robert Rickmers was the son of Peter Rickmers (1838-1902) from the Rickmers dynasty and grandson of Rickmer Clasen Rickmers (1807-1886). He was married to the actress Lily Lehmann (1869–1936). From 1897 both lived at the Hodenberg country estate in Oberneuland .

He attended school in a boarding school. He completed his apprenticeship with his uncle Andreas Rickmers (1835–1924). He worked for some time in back India and East Asia . In 1894 he became a member of the board of directors of Rickmers Reismühlen Rhederei und Schiffbau AG with Rickmers-Werft , Rickmers Reederei and Rickmers Reismühlen GmbH . From 1901 he was managing director of the Reis und Handels-Actien-Gesellschaft, founded by Rickmers and Nielsen in the same year, and at the same time head of the factory in Grünenstrasse.

Gut Hodenberg , which was first mentioned in 1149, was owned by Rickmers from 1897 to 1948. His wife had an open-air theater set up. The estate was a meeting place for many artists. Ernst Müller-Scheeßel , Th. Hermann, Albert Ritterhoff and Heinrich Vogeler worked here. In 1936 Rickmers converted the house into the Der Hodenberg Foundation , which in 1948 was transferred to the Foundation for the Care of Lower Saxony's love of home .

His grave is in the Osterholz cemetery .

The Rickmersstraße in Bremen-Oberneuland was named after him.
