Robert Schrader (born September 12, 1939 ; † November 29, 2015 ) was a German theoretical and mathematical physicist.

Live and act

Schrader studied physics at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , the University of Zurich and the University of Hamburg from 1959 to 1964 , where he graduated from Hans Joos in 1964 (with a thesis on the representation theory of the Poincaré group). In 1965 he went to the ETH Zurich , where he was an assistant and in 1969 received his doctorate from Res Jost (“The Galilei-invariant Lee model”). 1970 to 1973 he was a Research Fellow at Harvard University at Princeton University . At Harvard at Arthur Jaffe , he worked with Konrad Osterwalder on Euclidean quantum field theory. In 1971 he completed his habilitation in Hamburg ("The Yukawa Model in Two Space-Time Dimensions"). From 1973 he was professor for theoretical physics at the Free University of Berlin . In 1974 and 1980 he was a visiting professor at IHES near Paris , 1976 at Harvard, 1979 at CERN , 1986/87 at the Institute for Advanced Study , 1989 at ETH and from 1982 to 1984 visiting professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook .

Schrader dealt with mathematical quantum field theory and introduced the Osterwalder-Schrader axioms in 1973 with Konrad Osterwalder. As early as the 1950s, a similarity between quantum field theory and statistical mechanics was established (by Julian Schwinger and others), if the usual space-time with a Minkowski metric is analytically continued to imaginary time values (Euclidean space-time). This could be justified mathematically with the Osterwalder-Schrader axioms. He also worked in other areas of mathematical and theoretical physics such as Yang-Mills theories , invariants of three-dimensional manifolds, statistical mechanics up to the measurement of gravitational waves with SQUIDs .
