Robert Leslie Shapiro (born September 2, 1942 in Plainfield , New Jersey ) is an American lawyer who gained international fame through the criminal case against OJ Simpson .

He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance in 1965 . He then completed a law degree at the Loyola Law School until 1969 . During this time he was briefly married. This marriage was annulled. From 1969 to 1972 he served as a deputy district attorney. In 1972 he opened his own law firm.

He has been married to a former model for the second time since 1970 . The older of his two sons died in 2005. In 1993 and 1994, he was listed in the National Law Journal's Top 100 Best Lawyers in the United States.

He was starred by Bruce Weitz in the television movie The OJ Simpson Story (1995), by Ron Silver in the miniseries American Tragedy (2000) and by John Travolta in the first season The People v. OJ Simpson embodied the anthology series American Crime Story .

Shapiro is considered America's top celebrity lawyer. He has represented Mobil Oil , musician Rod Stewart , talk show host Johnny Carson , baseball player Darryl Strawberry , baseball player Vince Coleman and Christian Brando , Marlon Brando's eldest son , as defense attorneys.
