Robert Simon Braunschweig

Robert Simon Braunschweig (* 25. August 1914 in Zurich ; † 20th June 2001 in Bern ) was a Swiss engineer and automotive - enthusiast .

Life

After Braunschweig's training as a mechanical engineer at the ETH Zurich , he became technical editor of Automobil Revue (Hallwag-Verlag Bern) in 1943 , where he was editor-in-chief from 1952 to 1980 . From 1948 to 1984 he was a board member of the Bern Jewish Community and was a founding member of the B'nei B'rith Lodge Albert Einstein Bern, which was founded in 1962. From 1964 to 1967 he was a member of the cantonal Grand Council of the party "Young Bern". From 1964 to 1978 he was president of the specialist group «Further training for motor vehicle drivers» of the Swiss Conference for Road Safety (SKS). Braunschweig was president of the Swiss Association of Israelites (SIG) and the Association of Swiss Automobile Importers (VSAI), both from 1980 to 1988. From 1962 to 1988 he was also a member of the board of trustees of the Geneva Motor Show .

Braunschweig had been married since 1943 and had two children. He died in Bern in 2001. His estate is in the Archives for Contemporary History at ETH Zurich. The holdings contain personal documents and other materials on political, professional and military activities as well as on the presidency of the SIG. There are also various illustrations of cars made by Braunschweig .

Braunschweig became a lieutenant motor driver in 1938. In 1942 he started experiments with substitute fuels for the army motorization department. In 1965 he became a colonel and thus head of the transport section in the army staff. From 1957 to 1980 he was a member of the commission for military motorization issues.
