Life

Strauch studied from 1890 to 1899 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Professors Carl Rudolf Huber , Christian Griepenkerl and August Eisenmenger . In 1882 he worked on Martin Gerlach's allegories and emblems . In 1899/1900 Strauch stayed in Italy as a scholarship holder , then as a volunteer with the Boers in the Second Boer War in South Africa . Subsequently, study trips led to Madagascar , Zanzibar and Mumbai . In 1902 he returned to Vienna and exhibited his works in the Miethke gallery . In 1905 he received a post as a teacher for freehand drawing at the grammar school in Klosterneuburg , where he taught Egon Schiele and discovered his talent. In 1906 Strauch was a co-founder of the Klosterneuburger Künstlerbund and regularly sent its exhibitions. He was also a member of the Meran Circolo artistico .

During the First World War , Strauch served as a first lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian Army and was also an artist as a soldier, as can be seen in paintings that are dated 1916 and are now in the collections of the Army History Museum in Vienna. As a result, Strauch was wounded and officially entered the Austro-Hungarian War Press Quarters as a war painter on January 14, 1917 (until November 1918). He was deployed on the Romanian and Italian fronts.

In 1935 he resigned as Councilor to retire.
