Robert Somers Brookings
Robert Somers Brookings (born January 22, 1850 in Cecil County , Maryland , † November 15, 1932 in Washington, DC ) was an American businessman , entrepreneur and philanthropist , who was best known for the Brookings Institution he founded in 1916 .
Life
Brookings, who grew up as a half- orphan with his brother Harry Brookings after the early death of his father in 1852 , initially worked in the household goods wholesaling of Samuel Cupples, where, together with his brother, later became a manager and then a partner and then continued to expand the company. He donated the fortune thus acquired not only to charity, but also founded the Brookings Institution in 1916, an independent organization and think tank for research, education and publication with a focus on public policy in the areas of economy, foreign policy and governance.
In addition, he was not only chairman of the Board of Trustees at Washington University in St. Louis and trustee of the Carnegie Foundation for International Peace in 1895 , but also the author of several specialist books such as Industrial Ownership, its economic and social significance (1925, German title Die Demokratieisierung der American Economy ), Economic Democracy (1929), and The Way Forward (1932).
