Robert Spencer Olpin

Robert "Bob" Spencer Olpin (born August 30, 1940 in Palo Alto , California , † November 5, 2005 in Murray , Utah ) was an American art historian and university professor.

Life

Olpin was the son of Ralph Smith Olpin (1910-2002) and Ethel Lucille, née Harman (1909-1990). He also had an older brother named Michael Ralph (* 1938), who died soon after he was born.

He himself visited to 1958 in his home town, the high school and then moved to study at the University of Utah to Salt Lake City , where he also is the Sigma Nu - Brotherhood joined and graduated in 1963. On August 24, 1963 he married the future teacher Mary Florence Reynolds (* 1939). The marriage resulted in four daughters. This was followed by a master's degree at Boston University from 1963 to 1965. Back in Salt Lake City, he was appointed to the chair of art history at the University of Utah's art faculty in 1967. In 1971 he received his doctorate. During his tenure as a professor at the University of Utah, he was twice director of the art history institute and dean of the faculty for ten years.

Olpin died after a stroke . He was buried in Murray City Cemetery, where he last lived.

Publications

Olpin wrote or was involved in editing about 45 publications and television reports. His art-historical focus was on the art history of the state of Utah and the art-historical view of American art in general.
