Robert Thren

Robert Ludwig Heinrich Thren (born May 4, 1909 in Lahr / Black Forest ; † October 26, 1995 in Radebeul ) was a German biologist and drug researcher , founder of Radebeul's penicillin production and national prize winner of the GDR .

Life

After graduating from high school in Lahr in 1928, studied natural sciences in Heidelberg and Freiburg i. Br. And doctorate in Heidelberg In 1933 Robert Thren worked first at the Botanical Institute in Stuttgart and then at the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Breeding at the University of Halle .

He moved in 1938 to Radebeul to there as head of the Botanical Department of the Biological Institute of Madaus to do research in the field of medicinal plants and microbiological problems. During the Second World War, Thren conducted experiments to produce penicillin . From 1945 he was the institute director there, while the company was renamed VEB Pharmazeutische Werke Madaus Radebeul. He built up penicillin production in East Germany, where he was responsible for natural product research from 1948. This merged on April 1, 1951, after merging with the expropriated Dresden parent company of Gehe & Co. (VEB Heilchemie), in the Biological Institute of the VEB Arzneimittelwerk Dresden , whose scientific director was Thren. In 1961 he was head of research for all natural product research there.

After his habilitation in 1948 in phytopathology in Halle-Wittenberg, he was a part-time lecturer there from 1949 to 1955. From 1956 to 1969, Thren was still part-time professor for technical microbiology at the TH Dresden.

From 1964 Thren was also chairman of the board of directors in the scientific-technical center for drugs, laboratory and fine chemicals of the VVB of the pharmaceutical industry of the GDR. From 1967 to 1974 the position of director of the Institute for Drug Research in Radebeul was added.

Robert Thren received the National Prize of the GDR in 1955 for his scientific achievements and the Patriotic Order of Merit in 1974 .

Thren last lived in the “ Sorgenfrei” house in Radebeul-Oberlößnitz .
