Robert Trappl (born January 16, 1939 in Vienna ) is an Austrian cyberneticist , artificial intelligence expert and emeritus university professor .

Life

Robert Trappl first studied electrical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology . He completed his subsequent doctorate in psychology with a minor in astronomy at the University of Vienna in 1966 with a dissertation on the subject of reference point regulation in perceptual processes and their importance for psychophysical scaling . He later received a diploma in sociology from the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS), and in 2012 he completed an MBA in general management .

In 1969 he was a co-founder of the Austrian Study Society for Cybernetics , of which he is still President today. Since 1972 it has organized the European Cybernetics and Systems Research Conference every two years. Trappl completed his habilitation in the field of biocybernetics and bioinformatics . From 1977 until his retirement in 2007 he headed the Institute for Medical Cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence at what is now the Medical University of Vienna , where he continues to give lectures. The Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (OFAI) was founded in 1984 . Trappl has been head of this since it was founded; around 25 scientists research in the field of artificial intelligence at the institute . In 2012 he was elected President of the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Sciences .

The preoccupation with the human psyche led Trappl to brain research and the question of how human thinking could be mapped using computers. For a long time, intelligence was understood exclusively as an expression of rationality and logic. In Trappl's view, emotionality, motivation and goals are just as important. He also dealt with the question of how armed conflicts could be avoided with artificial intelligence. For example, the analysis of conflict databases can be used to determine which mediation strategy is the most promising in an international conflict. He has worked as a consultant for organizations such as the EU, OECD, UNIDO and WHO.

Trappl has published over 180 scientific articles and has contributed to 35 specialist books as editor, co-author or author. He is also editor of the journals Cybernetics and Systems and Applied Artificial Intelligence .

In his free time, Trappl is engaged in pantomime, acting improvisation and contemporary dance.
