Robert Urbain

Robert Urbain (born November 24, 1930 in Hornu , Hainaut , Belgium ; † November 9, 2018 ) was a Belgian politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS) .

biography

After graduating, Urbain worked as a teacher and was elected for the first time in 1971 as a candidate for the PS as a member of the Chamber of Deputies , in which he represented the arrondissement of Mons until 1995 .

In 1973, he briefly took over his first government office as Secretary of State for Regional Planning and Housing in the government of Prime Minister Edmond Leburton .

From 1977 to 2006 he was mayor of Boussu and from 1977 to 1978 he was also Minister for Regional Economy in the cabinet of Prime Minister Leo Tindemans . Prime Minister Wilfried Martens appointed him Minister for Post, Telegraph and Telephone (PTT) from 1979 to 1980. He was then Minister for Foreign Trade in his cabinet in 1980 and 1980 to 1981 .

After leaving the federal government, he was a member of the Walloon Government under Prime Ministers Jean-Maurice Dehousse and André Damseaux from 1981 to 1985 as Minister of Health and Education. He later served as Minister of Health and Social Affairs in the Government of Wallonia led by Guy Coëme in 1988 .

In the eighth and ninth governments of Prime Minister Wilfried Martens, he was again Minister for Foreign Trade from May 1988 to March 1992. In the subsequent first cabinet of Jean-Luc Dehaene , he was Assistant State Secretary at the Foreign Minister until June 1995 and as such was responsible for foreign trade and European affairs.

After leaving the Chamber of Deputies and the government, he was a representative of the PS in the Senate between 1995 and 1999 .

Robert Urbain was honored with the title of Minister of State for his political merits on July 17, 1998 , and as such was a member of the Privy Council .
