Robert Valentine

Robert Valentine (Robert Follentine) (born January 16, 1674 in Leicester , † after 1735) was an English flautist and composer.

Life

Robert Valentine comes from an English family of musicians, his father was Thomas Follentine, who worked in Leicester from 1670 and moved to Italy in the 1690s because of unsafe positions, and spent his entire professional life in Rome or Naples . From 1707 Robert Valentine is mentioned several times as a recorder and oboist at concerts in the Palazzo Ruspoli , where Arcangelo Corelli , Antonio Caldara and Georg Friedrich Handel were performing their works at that time . Valentine worked as a flautist and composer in Rome, among others he was in the service of Sir Thomas Samwell. Whether Valentine returned to his homeland around 1730, as is assumed, has not been established, although the publisher John Walsh was publishing Valentine's works at that time. Valentine possibly stayed in Amsterdam in 1735 to revive his acquaintance with Pietro Locatelli , who was an important link between the Italian composers and the Dutch publishers.

He created numerous sonatas for violin, some concerti grossi and, among other works, mainly compositions for flute in various ensembles. He wrote mostly in the Corellising style of his time, but could not hide his English origins in his melodies. This peculiarity gave his works, especially those for flute, some popularity in his day. He was the only member of his musically very active family who became known beyond Leicester.
