Robert Vandekerckhove

Robert Gerard Vandekerckhove (born June 30, 1917 in Ingelmunster , Flanders , Belgium ; † February 23, 1980 in Mechelen , Antwerp province , Belgium) was a Belgian politician of the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP) and President of the Senate .

biography

After attending school, he studied law and was on the promotion of Doctor of Law at first a lecturer and then later after admission lawyer and notary in Mechelen.

Vandekerckhove began his political career when he was elected a member of the Senate , to which he was a member from 1958 until his death in 1980. During this time he was chairman of the Flemish Wing within the CVP from 1963 to 1972 and chairman of the Council for the Dutch Cultural Community ( Raad voor de Nederlandse Cultuurgemeenschap ) from 1971 to 1974 .

In April 1974 he was appointed Minister for Institutional Reforms ( Minister voor Hervorming der Instellingen ) by Prime Minister Leo Tindemans and held this ministerial office until June 1977.

On June 7, 1977, he finally became President of the Senate ( Voorzitter van de Senaat ) and held this position until his death.

Vandekerckhove was the brother of Rik Vandekerckhove , who was also a Senator as a representative of the Volksunie and Minister of Science from 1977–1980. He was also a brother-in-law of Albert De Clerck , who was an MP, Senator and Minister, and the uncle of his son Stefaan De Clerck , the current Minister of Justice and former Mayor of Kortrijk .
